NORTH Tawton Rugby Football Club will be the host ground for the Max Levene Rugby Day, which will include a special womens' triangular tournament on Sunday, February 14.

Max broke his C6 vertebra accidentally while playing for Truro College against Kelly College and is now a tetraplegic with limited movement above the chest and limited arm movement.

Denise Hodge of Devon Women's and Girls' Rugby, one of the organisers, said they hope to raise enough money on the day to part fund an off-road wheelchair for Max, who is currently in rehabilitation at Salisbury.

Denise said she was grateful to North Tawton RFC for offering their ground and facilities free of charge.

Ladies teams from Devon Seniors, Tamar Barbarians and Bristol University first XVs will be taking part.

The day starts at noon, with games at 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

The day has been organised in conjunction by members of a rugby forum site called RUCKU founded by former England rugby captain Will Carling.

Guy Levene, Max's father, said: 'Max has never doubted that he will have a full life and, to be frank, I am a little in awe of my own son's determination and positive mental attitude to his situation.

'Max is really grateful for everybody's concern and help.'

The Max Levene Rugby Day will also launch the newly formed Plymouth Albion Wheelchair Rugby Club.

The club has been successful in obtaining a £9,000 award from Sport England to match-fund a £9,000 grant from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts. The £18,000 will now help provide funding to pay for specially designed wheelchairs the players use for this particular code of the game.

Each chair costs around £2,500.
