THIS was a tight game between two well matched sides. Chagford saw two early efforts, from corners, go wide. Then Hatherleigh had a chance to score in the eighth minute, Steve Cleave just missing out.
Hatherleigh keeper Gary Toop had to make a save from a Jerome Whatley corner which was swung in under the bar.
Chagford?s keeper Dave Endacott made a good save in the 20th minute when he dived low to his left to keep the shot out.
The second half was much the same as the first with both sides cancelling out each other for long spells. Chagford kept up the pressure and twice went close to scoring.
Chagford appeals for a penalty late in the half were waved away by the referee then Mark Williams went close forcing Toop to pull off an excellent reaction save after being put through by Robbie Miller.
The second half finished goalless and went into extra time, coming alive just before the end of the first period when a cross from Paul Endacott was converted into a goal by a flying header from Stuart Dymond from three yards out. Hatherleigh thought they had won it but with seven minutes to go player-manager Colin Mortimer came on and almost immediately equalised heading home from a free-kick.
This put the game into the dreaded penalty shootout and two saves from Chagford keeper Dave Endacott gave his side the Okehampton Cup for the first time in their history.
The organisers of the cup expressed thanks to the match officials, Steve White (referee), Steve Perry and Dave Rose (assistant referees), both of the teams and the supporters for helping to making the day enjoyable for all.
After eight years in charge of organising the Okehampton Cup, Andy Butler has decided to stand down. Okehampton Argyle chairman Colin Maddax voiced thanks to Andy for all his hard work ? he turned the tournament around and made it a success after years in the wilderness.
