A SPECIAL event to showcase potential products and the uses of fleece from Dartmoor sheep will be held at the Duchy Square Centre in Princetown from this Saturday to Monday (September 10).
Unravelling the tale of Moor Wool tells the story of Dartmoor fleece from the land to the loom through displays, images, demonstrations and products.
For generations Dartmoor farmers have grazed sheep on the high moorland of Dartmoor. The breeds of sheep that graze here have a fleece which has to provide protection from some tough conditions.
Along with ponies and cattle, these animals are a vital element of moorland management, providing benefits for wildlife, archaeology, human recreation and landscape value.
Moor Wool is a small group of farmers led by the Dartmoor Hill Farm Project which has been working to add value to the fleeces produced from sheep on the commons of Dartmoor. They have taken fleeces from sheep that graze the high moor and, by mixing them, have produced a variety of superb knitting yarns, weaving yarns, tweed material, throws and twine.
Unravelling the Tale of Moor Wool is open to the public from 10am to 4pm each day. Admission is free.
Visitors can meet the Moor Wool farmers, learn more about their products and the future of Moor Wool.
There will be displays of shearing as well as an exhibition of exclusive handcrafted items for the home as well as items of clothing.
