HOW we look after the legacy of our ancient churches and what communities can do to breathe life into them —that's the annual debate for the Dartmoor Society which is moving from Dartmoor to Exeter to mark the 1,100th anniversary of the Diocese of Exeter.

The debate 'Dartmoor Churches and Chapels: Community and Conservation' will take place at the Chapter House in Exeter Cathedral on Saturday, September 12, from 10am to 4.30pm. The event will help to address these core questions at a critical moment in the history of the church on Dartmoor and there will be time for open discussion. President of the Dartmoor Society and heritage protection director for English Heritage Peter Beacham will set the scene by talking on 'Listing: Bane or Blessing.'

The Venerable John Rawlings, Archdeacon of Totnes, the former vicar of Tavistock and Gulworthy, will talk on current pastoral care and the future presence of the church in Dartmoor parishes. Dawn Hatton and Penny Perkins, who will talk on the Throwleigh Festival, are among other speakers. Optional visits to the cathedral, its library and the Grandisson chapel will form part of the day.

Prior booking is essential by September 5. Tickets are priced at £12.50 (£11 for members) and includes buffet lunch, tea and coffee. Contact 01395 267838 for details.
