A WOMAN, originally from Okehampton, is taking on a mammoth running to commemorate the life of her mum and to raise money for a charity close to her heart.

Daisy Peter, 21, hopes to raise £5,000 for Hospiscare by running 100-kilometres over five races in memory of her mum, Amanda.

Amanda was diagnosed with terminal cancer and was admitted to the Exeter hospice in September 2015. At this time, Daisy was pregnant and one week overdue with her first child.

Daisy explained: ‘It was a very emotional time for us all.

‘I was in labour having contractions while Mum was not expected to live more than a few hours.

‘Throughout this difficult time the hospice staff were fantastic and they were moved to tears when Mum survived long enough to meet her granddaughter, Lily, just after she was born.’

18-months-later little Lily is a lively toddler and on Mother’s Day 2017, Daisy launched her fundraising campaign, Run for Mum, in aid of Hospiscare.

The determined young mum has completed her first 10-kilometre run and is in training to run a quadruple challenge, taking on another 10-kilometre race, two half marathons and then a full marathon this year.

Daisy said: ‘The hospice provided us with a sanctuary — a safe and calm place where Mum was cared for wonderfully, and died peacefully,’ said Daisy.

‘The nurses and doctors work tirelessly to ensure that all their patients are as comfortable and peaceful as they can be. Hospiscare also helped to provide our family with fond, lovely memories of that time we spent with Mum.

It is so important that places like this keep running and that is why I am taking on the running challenge. The money I raise will help another family like ours, and make, what feels like the darkest times, that bit lighter and easier to get through.’

Daisy, who now lives in Somerset with her daughter and partner, said she often visits her hometown of Okehampton to visit her dad.

She is currently training to become a teacher at Bath Spa University.

After completing the Corsham St George’s race, Daisy will be running the Lacock Road Race Half Marathon on May 18 and the New Forest Marathon in September.
