MORE than 100 cyclists from various parts of the UK met in Tavistock at the weekend to take part in a series of long distance and hilly cycling events. The AUDAX rides were run by the Devon CTC (Cyclists? 67 Touring Club), and took the riders on hilly but scenic excursions into East Cornwall and North Devon. On Saturday, more than 50 riders set of on the ?Highs and Looes? 200Km event and the ?Kit Hill Bypass? 150Km event. They took a route which climbed to Minions, turned at Jamaica Inn, and passed the Colliford Lake, to Dobwalls and Looe where most stopped for lunch. The weather was warm as the riders continued along the south coast through Seaton, then inland via St German?s, and Callington to Launceston. From there the 150Km group headed back to Tavistock while the 200Km group continued north to Hatherleigh, then returned to Tavistock on the A386. On Sunday another 60 riders set off on the Kit Hill Gimpuer, a 100Km super hilly event which is now becoming a classic ride. The finishers were all able to purchase a special medal. For the 200Km riders the event was the first in the SWAUKS Super randonneur series, a set of rides where a spcial award can be gained for riding 200, 300, 400 and 600Km in Devon and Cornwall.
