MR Anstead's letter re Gem Bridge (March 1) sets out a most interesting account of the history of the former railway bridges and their eventual replacement/demolition.

It is disappointing, therefore, that he closes with negative points.

Not far away from the Walkham Valley there exists a splendid cycle path running from Yelverton, via Clearbrook, past Bickleigh to Plymouth or Saltram. It is enjoyed by cyclists, dog walkers, ramblers and the disabled and like all these routes encourages all sections of the community to get exercise whilst appreciating the superb natural beauty of the area. In a world so full of conflict and poor health surely something worth celebrating?

Besides the marvellous job Devon County Council does in looking after such routes on a cost-effective basis, those of us who are Sustrans volunteers do our best to keep the vegetation under control.

Finally, in these difficult economic times, when the route from Plymouth is open all the way to Tavistock later this year it will bring a much needed financial boost to the local tourism sector.
