PEOPLE will soon be able to enjoy the dramatic scenery from Okehampton Station to Meldon Viaduct on two wheels with the final pieces of the cycle route jigsaw being put in place.
Half of the cycle route from the station to the A30 crossing has been constructed and Devon Council Council is currently finalising plans for phase two which will stretch to the viaduct.
Forming part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network 'Devon Coast to Coast' route — the work is costing in the region of £350,000.
Project manager Graham Cornish said part of the reason why the work was so expensive was a structure had to be built to get onto railway land at Tree Sidings.
'A lot of the cycle network is on disused railway lines but this route follows the active railway so we have had to put up special fences and comply with safety regulations,' he said.
'Ultimately when we get through to Meldon people will be able to cycle along next to the quarry trains.'
Staff at Dartmoor Railway have been busy clearing vegetation and erecting fencing over the past few weeks.
Mr Cornish said eventually there would be a complete off-road ten mile cycle route from Okehampton to Lydford which was expected to be one of the most dramatic in the Westcountry.
'Cycling across the moor there will be wonderful views down to Cornwall and up to the Tors of Dartmoor,' he said.
'It will cut out miles and miles of road journey when it opens.'
The Devon Coast to Coast route from Ilfracombe to Plymouth is very popular amongst cyclists with thousands of maps being sold last year.
The project manager said to have this cycle route on the doorstep Okehampton would be a lot more attractive to walkers and cyclists.
'Being able to get from Okehampton Station down onto the moor on a level path is quite a step forward for the town,' he added.
