THREE men have gone the extra mile and cycled miles across the country from Middlesex to Tavistock recently, in memory of a Tavistock firefighter.

Robert Gannon, Tim Delaney and Stuart McClelland took part in the challenge as a way of marking the anniversary of firefighter Danny Delaney's death last year.

Danny was a well known firefighter in the town but died last year after a six-year battle with cancer, leaving behind his wife and three children.

Danny's mother Pam said: 'My daughter's boyfriend Robert came up with the idea for the bike ride, as he basically knew that Danny would've laughed his head off and thought he was mad! My son Tim and Robert's work colleague Stuart, all took part in the bike ride.

The three cyclists set off from Bracknell and rode to Shaftsbury, where they stayed overnight, moving onto Exeter the following day.

Pam said: 'Day two was the most challenging day for them — filled with cramp and several punctures. They finished five hours later than expected.'

On the third day the men rode across Dartmoor and on to Tavistock.

'The boys did really well and I am very proud of them for doing this in memory of a very brave man,' added Pam.
