IN the Okehampton and District table tennis league Okehampton A won the Bill Fogerty Cup.
In the cup final, Okehampton A were at home to Academy 'A'. Barry Denner won against Tom Pearce to put Oke 1-0 up as Ben Hill beat Barry Vaughan to level. Okehampton won the next three to put them 4-1 ahead. Ben Hill won the next against John Squires 4-2 to Oke. They then took the next three for a 7-2 win to Okehampton.
The first matches of the new league season started on November 1 in division one. Tavistock were at home to Okehampton 'A; who went 0-2 ahead. Naomi Jackson beat Martin Fowler and Barry Vaughan beat Peter Hicks in a five leg thriller. Roger Bunkett beat John Squires while Naomi Jackson went on to complete a five maximum ably supported by Barry Vaughan with two. Naomi and Barry won the doubles for a 6-4 win for Okehampton.
In division one Academy were at home against Bridestowe. Tom Pearce beat Mark Fogerty to put Academy 1-0 ahead. Bridestowe levelled at 1-1, Phil Down beating Ben Hill. In the next Francis Griffiths beat Tom Pengelly in a thrilling five leg set, 6-11 in the fifth. Bridestowe went 3-1 ahead in the next, Mark Fogerty beating Ben Hill in another five leg decider. Tom Pearce won his second against Phil Down and Ben Hill made it 4-3 beating Francis in straight sets. Mark Fogerty beat Tom Pengelly to make the score 4-4. In the last singles Tom Pearce completed a five maximum against Phil Down to go 5-1. Mark Fogerty and Francis Griffiths won the doubles against Tom Pearce and Tom Pengelly for a 5-5 draw.
In division two Okehampton 'C' were at home to Moretonhampstead. Frank Cockburn took on Ken Underhill in a five set match. Ken narrowly won to put Moretonhampstead one up. Martin Rose beat Brian Skilton to level at 1-1. Ivor Cupley won the next against Graham Adwitt and Ken beat Martin for 2-2. Frank put Okehampton ahead again against Graham and Brian levelled. Martin did well to beat Graham to put Okehampton 4-3 ahead. Ken completed his maximum against Ivor to make it 4-4. Frank won the next against Brian.
The doubles was another five leg despite Ken and Brian winning the first two legs 5-11 against Frank and Martin who did well to fight back taking the next three legs for a 6-4 win.
In the next match Okehampton 'B' took on Anchorage. Keira was the star at 11 years, he beat the more experienced Colin Jones, Roger Gilbert and Malcom Hopkins. Anchorage went 2-0 ahead then Maureen Venton made the score 2-2. Then the scores went to 3-3 and 4-4 before Roger beat Dick Randell in the last singles to put Anchorage 5-4 ahead. In the doubles Maureen and Keira were against Roger and Malcom in another five leg win, for a 6-4 win for Anchorage.
The last division two match was Moretonhampstead against Milton Abbot 'A'. Ken Underhill put Moretonhampstead 1-0 ahead against Michael Blatchford.
Richard Underhill just lost out to 13 year old Tim Westcott. Milton A went in to a 1-3 lead before Ken won the next against Ian Osborne. Milton A took the next three. In the last singles Ken completed his maximum against young Tim in straight sets. In the doubles Ken and Richard lost to Ian and Tim for a 7-3 win to Milton Abbot.
