HATHERLEIGH U14's were involved in a tense and exciting cup final run by the North Devon Opticop Youth League. The boys played against South Molton Youth FC at Braunton's ground.
South Molton quickly established a 3-1 lead in the first half and although Hatherleigh were working hard as a team they seemed unable to make any headway.
In the second half Hatherleigh's determination finally paid off with two goals bringing the scores level at full time and take it to extra time. Despite excellent commitment from both teams in trying to find the winning goal extra time ended with the scores locked at 3-3 it was time for penalties.
Jason Winsor, Hatherleigh's goalkeeper, was in fantastic form saving two penalities from South Molton. Hatherleigh only needed to score one more penalty and the trophy was theirs. Player of the match Jason stepped up and scored. Hatherleigh won the penalty shoot out 4-2. This is the second season for Hatherleigh in the North Devon Opticop Youth League and the U14's also achieved fourth place in the league for season 2008/9.
l Hatherleigh Youth Football club start their training for the new season today (August 13) at Hatherleigh Football Club from 6pm to 7.30pm. Hatherleigh have two age groups U15s and U10s and are looking for more players to join this friendly club. Everyone is welcome and you do not have to live in Hatherleigh to play for either team.
