Tavistock AFC 1

Bodmin Town 3

THE Lambs are out of the FA Cup after a very disappointing display. Having been the only side to defeat their visitors so far this season, in a league match earlier in the month expectations were high that they could progress to the next round. Bodmin Town were having none of it and put in a thoroughly professional performance and in the end proved to be the much better side on the day.

Tavistock got off to a good start with John James going close in the tenth minute, when his goal bound shot was deflected by a defender for a corner kick.

The home team continued to press forward and took the lead in the 15th minute when Jarryd Kelly waltzed pass two defenders before firing a low shot into Kevin Millers goal from ten yards.

John Wyatt then made a great run down the left before shooting for goal from a difficult angle, with Sargent and Kelly calling for a cross into the penalty area, which would have almost certainly produced a goal.

Minutes later the visitors equalised when after a poor clearance by Kinsman resulted in a free kick being awarded, Sam Mathews followed in on the free kick which the home defence failed to clear, to blast the ball into the net from 18 yards.

On the half hour the visitors took the lead when Ben Smallridge let fly from 25 yards and the ball flew into the bottom corner of Dean Smiths goal.

This lifted the visitors with the home team became very edgy, and relied on the long ball rather than the passing game they are good at.

The home team had two lucky escapes when the woodwork prevented the visitors from increasing their lead. Just before the interval Ben Davies sent Kelly away down the right but John James' header went inches over the bar.

The second half saw the visitors in control and Dean Smith was called to make a couple of great saves.

The Lambs huffed and puffed but the Bodmin back four was very sound, playing a high line of defence which caught the home forwards off side on numerous occasions.

It came as no surprise when Bodmin increased their lead in the 78th minute when Mathews broke free and lobbed Dean Smith to make it 3-1.

The Lambs gave it their best shot in the time remaining but could not break down a resolute defence.

There is no doubt that the best team won on the day, but it was disappointing that The Lambs never really got anywhere near the performance level of the past few matches, on a day when it was important to be at their best.

They will need to get their passing game back on track this Saturday, with a tricky fixture against Crediton in the FA Vase. KO 3pm.

Tavistock Reserves away to Lanreath, KO 2.30pm.
