GOING into the last two matches of the season BAT?s Badminton Club knew they only needed to take eight points off the one team they had to play ? Greenbank C ? to win Division 2 of the Plymouth and District Badminton League. BAT?s were missing one player due to injury but David Williams was a good substitute. The men?s doubles, which had been the backbone of BAT?s strong season, only took one rubber for once when Julian Cooper and David Williams overcame a strong Greenbank pair. The ladies? doubles rubbers assisted the points count with a second point towards the total. BAT?s mixed doubles rubbers helped even further with Julian and Heather Cooper winning against the Greenbank first pair and David Williams and Frances Ward winning their rubber. BAT?s came away from Greenbank having lost 4-5 but knowing that they were four points nearer winning the division. The final match of the season saw BAT?s A again take on Greenbank C but this time with a full team and home advantage. BAT?s men started off the match determined to improve on the previous match and this they did, winning all three rubbers without losing a game. The ladies won the first rubber but were unable to repeat the feat in the other two rubbers. At this time BAT?s now knew that they had won division 2 of the Plymouth and District Badminton league but were determined to crown it with success in the mixed doubles rubbers. BAT?s pressed home their advantage by taking all three rubbers. l Pictured are BAT?s A Team Players: (back) Julian Cooper, Heather Cooper, Alan Berry, James Cooper, (front) Becky Ward, Frances Ward.
