THE foot and mouth disease crisis continues to affect a wide variety of events planned in West Devon.

Sporting fixtures were virtually wiped out last weekend — a situation which seems likely to continue for some time to come.

The Devon Junior Minor football league has been cancelled until further notice — friendly games are not being played either.

Tavistock Rugby Club is unable to use itsr pitches as they are surrounded by farmland.

Even darts matches have been cancelled in rural areas.

Tavistock Young Farmers' Club was unable to hold its annual dinner and dance last Friday, although the draw took place at the offices of Ward and Chowan. The club thanked those who donated a draw prize and congratulated those who won.

The 18th Dartmoor Jailbreak is due to take place on April 18. The organisers are still hoping to hold the event on the moor, but if the current situation continues, jailbreakers would start from Vranch House School in Exeter.

Planning for this year's Royal Cornwall Show is underway as normal, but show secretary Christopher Riddle said the situation is under constant scrutiny.

If livestock classes have to be cancelled at the show, which takes place at the beginning of June, entry and stalling fees for cattle, sheep, pig and goats will be refunded.
