WEST Devon has seen an overall drop in crime of 11.8% in the last year according to the latest figures, again proving its standing as one of the safest places to live in England.

The figures show a large drop in domestic burglary and significant falls in both serious and common assault against last year's figures.

Crime reduction work is part of the South Devon and Dartmoor Community Safety Partnership, which operates across Teignbridge and South Hams as well as West Devon.

The partnership involves a close working link with many other agencies and organisations, including the police.

One example of this is the Designated Public Place Order, introduced in Okehampton late last year. The order, which was made by West Devon Borough Council, gives additional powers to the police to reduce alcohol related disorder and anti-social behaviour in the town's centre and the surrounding neighbourhood.

In Tavistock, the Late Night Economy Forum is going from strength to strength. The forum is made up of licensed businesses and individuals who trade in the evenings. Emphasis is placed on responsible drinking, considering others and reducing anti-social behaviour.

West Devon borough councillor Mandy Govier, chair of the partnership, said: 'I'm delighted that the initiatives we have introduced are benefiting our local communities. The Late Night Economy Forum members deserve special praise for giving up their precious time to attend meetings and get initiatives underway to ensure our towns are safe places for all during a night out.'
