WEST Devon firefighters were called out to two major incidents which broke out on Monday afternoon (August 15). A crew from Okehampton helped provide overnight relief to crews who had been fighting a barn fire at Kilmington, near Axminster for nearly five hours. The Okehampton crew arrived at around 10pm and continued fighting the blaze until 7am the following day. A crew from Chagford then relieved the Okehampton firefighters. North Tawton firefighters were among eleven crews across Devon called to a school fire in Exeter. The crew were sent to the fire at the new Priory High School, at around 3.30pm on Monday and were at the scene for around six hours. The fire is understood to have began in the insulation cavity wall of the school?s sports hall. Station officer Twiggy Lake said: ?It was difficult working because of the restrictions placed on us not just by the height but also by the heat and the dense smoke given off by the toxic plastic.? He said a specialist urban search and rescue team had used cutting equipment to help the crews get access to the burning insulation material and wall lining.
