FIRE crews from Bere Alston, Yelverton and Tavistock assisted at a major fire at a bakery in Plymouth over the weekend. The Yelverton crew was called to the fire at Hilliers of Plymouth on the Newnham Industrial Estate in Plympton at 8.50pm on Saturday and helped fight the fire, eventually returning home at 1.20am. The Bere Alston crew also arrived on the scene at 9.20pm and remained fighting the fire until 3.30am. The fire spread through the roof of the whole factory, the only part unaffected being the office block. Tavistock crew assisted by taking the water bowser from Plympton to the scene before returning home and being on stand-by. Fifteen appliances and special appliances attended the scene, including pumping and aerial appliances. The hot spots at the scene were still being damped down on Monday morning. l A four-by-four vehicle from Tavistock fire station was called to assist police, two fire engines, ambulance personnel and an air sea rescue helicopter at Newgate Marsh, Poundsgate, at 5.46pm on Sunday, where a man had fallen approximately 25 feet down a steep bank. The 69-year-old man from Newton Abbot suffered head injuries, which were not thought to be life-threatening. The fire service estimated he was approximately 30 minutes? walk from the nearest road, which made access to him difficult. He was placed on an inflatable raft before being airlifted to Derriford Hospital.
