FIREfighters from Callington and Bere Alston were joined by other teams across the two counties as they tackled a large blaze at a scrapyard in Gunnislake on Saturday. The fire, in Delaware Road at around 3.45pm, involved a range of single storey sheds containing gas cylinders, paint and vehicles, which were well alight. At one point the crews were forced to fight the fire from a distance using two jets. Further resources were called in including the aerial ladder platform from Plymouth and a hose layer from Tavistock. Two teams from Tavistock and Saltash also attended the fire. Three jet hoses were used and firefighters wore breathing apparatus. One person was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel for superficial burns and the effects of smoke inhalation and was taken to Derriford Hospital as a precautionary measure. The last fire appliance returned to base at approximately 10.30pm. It is believed the cause of the fire was accidental.
