YELVERTON firefighters are warning the public of the dangers of moving injured people, following a road traffic accident on Saturday involving a car and a public transport bus. Five people were taken to hospital, two with suspected spinal injuries, after the collision on the A386 near Yelverton Golf Course just before 5pm. A local woman had to be cut free from her Ford Focus but her two children in the vehicle were removed before the fire crews arrived. Watch manager at Yelverton, Fred Glanville said although it was commendable that people tried to help at the scene, it was vitally important that the injured parties were not moved. ?As long as they have a pulse and are not in imminent danger, say for example, from a burning vehicle, they should be left until the paramedics arrive,? he said. ?By moving a person, you can potentially cause more harm. Fortunately this was not the case on Saturday.? Firefighters used hydraulic equipment to cut away the roof of the car and free the woman who was brought out on a spinal board. She and her two young passengers, who attend St Andrew?s Primary School in Buckland Monachorum, were taken to Derriford Hospital. The six-year-old boy suffered a fractured collar bone. Two adult bus passengers were also taken to hospital with minor injuries. The number 86 Plymouth to Tavistock bus was on its way back to the city when the accident occurred, closing the road for three hours. Firefighters from Yelverton were joined by a firecrew from Crownhill, six ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and police officers. Mr Glanville praised his team, in particular acting crew commander Alan Brown who was in charge at the scene. ?It was a daunting task, faced with an accident like this involving multiple injuries, children, passengers on a bus and people trapped,? he said. ?The Yelverton crew was the first at the scene and the way it was handled is a credit to Alan?s command and control. ?He and the whole team did a good job.?
