POLICE in Callington were among those who took part in a crackdown on motorists who were flouting the law by driving illegally or whose vehicles were illegal.

The operation, conducted from the Rifle Volunteer pub car park in St Ann's Chapel on January 20, saw police stop 45 vehicles on the A390 Callington-Tavistock road between 10am and 3pm.

Police worked in conjunction with inspectors from the Vehicle Safety Agency from Plymouth.

One vehicle was seized after a driver was stopped who did not have a driving licence; six motorists were prohibited from taking their vehicles away for safety reasons while one motorbike was found to have an illegal registration plate.

PC Julian Collison, neigbourhood beat manager for Callington, said: 'The A390 is one of the three main road arteries in the county and this sort of operation reminds those committing motoring crimes that they are not safe from being caught.'

PC Collison deemed the operation a success and added that police had 'a lot of positive response from the public' who were driving their vehicles legally.

The police expect to mount a similar operation in a month's time, although no warning will be given of location.
