THE Grade II Listed Court Gate Cottage in the heart of Tavistock is to be updated and rented out, following a decision by the town council?s properties committee. The cottage, currently being used free of charge by Tavistock Museum as overflow storage, needs a new kitchen, bathroom and total redecoration, but updated, could bring in valuable income to the council. Cllr Brian Trew said: ?We have a property here that several people have shown an interest in. From an auditor?s point of view, we can?t justify doing nothing. I propose we take steps to rent the property on a short or long lease and get some income for the council.? Cllr Betty Batchelor agreed, but said the council needed costings on how much it would cost to get the cottage in a fit state to rent before it could move forward. The committee agreed the clerk should contact the council?s surveyors to prepare estimates on making the cottage habitable, with a view to letting it.
