VIEWERS who tune in to the the popular Channel 4 television documentary series 'The Hotel' on Sunday evenings can look forward to seeing a West Devon couple 'star' in a forthcoming episode.
The fly-on-the-wall series follows a summer season at the Grosvenor Hotel in Torquay, with the comedy-documentary looking at life 'above and below stairs' at the three-star establishment on the English Riviera waterfront.
It follows owner 51-year-old Mark Jenkins, deputy manager Christian, reservations manager Alison and the rest of the staff with all the fun and challenges of looking after and entertaining their guests.
Last July, after spending some time in Padstow, newlyweds Jayne and Michael Watkin from Torlands, Tavistock — who met when Michael babysitted single mother Jayne's four children — ended up in Torquay and, by chance, booked into the Grosvenor for a few days for the remainder of their honeymoon, little knowing the hotel was the focus of the television documentary.
They will be appearing in episode six 'Singles Night' when Mark decides to re-open the hotel's nightclub — not in the hope of finding a new partner, but in a bid to cash in on this potential goldmine.
Christian thinks he's come up with the perfect solution to reinvigorate the hotel — an 'omni-sexual' club night called 'Fusion'.
'Torquay needs something, it's lost its sparkle, it's lost its va-va-voom,' explains Christian, who offers to create a stir in town by going out in full drag with semi-naked men to advertise his brainchild.
Jayne, aged 39, and a carer at Spring House Residential Home in Peter Tavy, said she and Michael, 28, who is employed at Tavistock Town Council works department, had a great time and hotel staff were excellent.
She told the Times: 'Elaine, one of the staff booked us, and they gave us a really beautiful suite, it was just lovely. The cameras were all over the place in the hotel but you didn't really notice them so it didn't bother us.
'It's a lovely atmosphere there, the staff are friendly and it was the little touches — like bringing us drinks down by the pool as a surprise — that really impressed us.
'It really just wasn't for the cameras, the staff were like that anyway. Alison was funny, Christian was hilarious, and Mark's mum, who you don't see much in the series, was a real character.
'As for Mark, he is really nice. He is totally dedicated to his job and works really hard, but nothing phases him, he just gets on with it.
'We had a great time, and thoroughly recommend the Grosvenor. The staff were more like one big family.'
A Channel 4 crew later came down to interview Jayne and Michael at their Tavistock home, to ask them, on camera, about their experience.
Jayne and Michael can also be seen in the opening credits — frollicking in the hotel's swimming pool.
Now its excitement in the Watkin household as Jayne, Michael, and children Jessica, aged 18, Danielle, 16, Shannon, 12 and Callum, 10 look forward to tuning into 'The Hotel' on Sunday, February 5, on Channel 4 at 8pm.
