A REPORT concerning a new purpose-built office base for West Devon Borough Council in Tavistock was discussed behind closed doors at a meeting in Okehampton this week.

The scheme to build the offices at the borough council-owned Riverside car park, near Tavistock's Meadows, was put to councillors in a management report at the full meeting of the borough council on Tuesday.

It has been put forward by Brook Street Properties London Ltd, which is interested in acquiring the present borough council base at Kilworthy Park in exchange for the new buildings.

Andrew Lopes, of Yelverton estate agents High Colton, a director of Brook Street Properties London Ltd, said: 'It's very much running an idea past them at this stage. Certainly what we are discussing with the council wouldn't be acted on for quite a while anyway.'

He remained tight-lipped on what the company wanted the Kilworthy site for. Mr Lopes said Brook Street Properties was a small company, with most of the directors being 'quite local people'.

David Incoll, borough council chief executive, said: 'Basically they have put these proposals to members and they have agreed to look further at this issue.'

At present the Kilworthy Park site is shared with other borough council partners, including Okehampton Local Service Group and Tamar Valley Services.

Councillors last month agreed to continue negotiations with the police authority over plans to extend the site to accommodate a new Tavistock police station.

Mr Incoll said it would be possible to fit these partners in at Riverside if they 'squeezed in' and the proposal put by Brook Street would not affect a move with the police.

'They want to be with us,' he said, but he could not put a timescale on the proposals, or guess at the eventual outcome.

'There's a lot of assessment to be done,' said Mr Incoll.
