Okehampton Columbines 3

St Austell 1

IN the last hockey league game of the season, Columbines needed a win or a draw to take the title.

The opposition were generous in the space they gave in the middle of the pitch, allowing Kelly Cooper to run at the defence with little resistance. She scored two goals for the Columbines and it was only the St Austell keeper who prevented her netting more.

St Austell put pressure on Okehampton early in the second half and in a flurry of activity, Sharon Stephens had to make some crucial saves.

If St Austell had scored then it might have made for a more hard-fought match, but once Jo Moppett?s strike from a bouncing ball hit the back of the net, St Austell lost heart.

They did get a consolation goal a short while later when a shot deflected into the roof of the net, but Okehampton ran out fairly easy winners.
