George Belli Cup first round East Allington 4 Chagford 1 HAVING already beaten East Allington away in the league, Chagford were hoping that a return trip to the South Hams club would see their passage into the second round of the cup. Chagford started well and Christian Crowther-Smith was causing the East Allington defence problems down the left flank. But a number of great crosses from Christian did not get the finish they deserved. East Allington gradually came into the game and took the lead with a fine strike from the edge of the box. Chagford continued to push forward but despite their hard work they were unable to find the killer touch and went two behind when they lost the ball in the midfield and a swift counter attack from East Allington was well finished by the midfielder bursting forward. Chagford started the second half in a similar vein to the first, but despite their efforts things were not working for them and East Allington extended their lead with a well taken third. Chagford seemed to realise that they were staring at an early exit from the cup and had more purpose to their football. They pulled a goal back when Christian Crowther-Smith beat three defenders in the box and coolly finished past the keeper. Chagford sensed things were moving their way and thought Wawick Botham had scored a second, only for the goal to be disallowed. Confused and a little disheartened Chagford were soon shocked when a defensive error gave the East Allington centre forward a chance to make the score 4-1. With time running out Chagford did not stop and were rewarded when Robin Crowther-Smith scored, but ultimately this was little more than a consolation. Chagford continue with cup action next weekend when they entertain Plymouth Parkway Reserves in the Premier Cup. SDFL division 5 Chagford Res 3 Ashburton Res 4 A STEVE Chivers hat-trick saw the visitors leave with all three points, despite a much better Chagford effort. Following a run of heavy defeats, Chagford made a number of changes and could have taken something from this game but for a poor spell early in the second half. Rob Lethbridge poached a 15th minute goal for the hosts, as he stole in on the defence?s blind side. Ashburton only took seven minutes to get on level terms as a fierce drive eluded Dowell?s grasp. On the 30th minute, an unchallenged back-post header gave them the lead. But there appeared to be more spirit in the side and, almost on half-time, Lethbridge grabbed an equaliser. After the break, some of the Chagford lads seemed to have stayed in the changing room as, for 20 or so minutes, wide gaps appeared between defence and forwards. This allowed Ashburton to go ahead again, following a goalmouth scramble, on the hour mark. They then seemed to have sewn up the game as a looping shot dropped into Dowell?s net, on 81 minutes. The battle went right to the end though when a disputed penalty award gave Stuart Potter the chance to coolly stroke the ball home, with almost the last kick of a tense match.
