South Devon Premier Brixham Villa 1 Chagford 3 THIS was a vital win for Chagford as they sought to get their title challenge back on track, against a side with equally lofty ambitions. Villa set off the brighter of the teams and each challenge also showed they were in no mood to relinquish their hold on the championship. Goalkeeper Scarry and his Chagford defence were called upon, a number of times, before the hosts broke through with a poorly conceded goal. Chagford failed to clear a corner and then hesitated in closing down Mitchell, allowing him to fire home from the edge of the box. Some of Chagfords' best work continued to come from their left flank but the whole team appeared confident they were not going to lose. The confidence was fully displayed as Christian Crowther-Smith's fine 30th minute corner was nodded home by Armstrong — into his own net! Villa now recognised they had a game on their hands and, four minutes later, Mark Williams broke free to rifle home Chagford' s second. Williams was the first to acknowledge Botham's superb 60 yard diagonal pass that sent him away. The half closed with Brixham wondering what they should do to break down a solid defence led by Endacott, supported by Hutchison and Botham. There was worse to follow for Villa seconds after the resumption of play, when Stuart Potter scored from an appar-ently impossible angle. When released by Chadwick's pass, Potter rode two challenges to almost reach the goal-line before he buried the ball in the far corner of Villa's net. From there on, Chagford knew they only needed to continue their strong rearguard action to nullify anything Villa threw at them. Joe Whatley came on to relieve Potter, for the last ten minutes. l This week-end, Chagford play twice against Hele Rovers. The first match at home on the Saturday; the second away on the Sunday. Both games kick- off at 3pm.
