WORKS by composer Johann Sebastian Bach will be broadcast live on national radio from a West Devon church this month.
The concert, in St John the Baptist Church at Hatherleigh, is part of Radio 3's and BBC 4's Piano Season which began with the finals of the Leeds Piano competition and runs for six weeks.
World famous pianist Lang Lang has already performed in this international event that also includes a specially devised programme, 50 Great Pianists in addition to the A-Z of Piano. There are six 'Live in Concert' events of which the recital in Hatherleigh is one.
'Gilded Goldbergs' is the name given to a two-piano piece by composer Robin Holloway, It is a 'recomposition' of Bach's famous Goldberg Variations and a tour de force to perform. Holloway has written it for two pianos and in order for this to be achieved in Hatherleigh, a Steinway piano is to be brought all the way from London to keep the festival's own super-grand Boesendorfer piano company.
Eminent pianists Ashley Wass and Huw Watkins, will be tackling this challenging piece. It will be just as Bach intended but for two instruments instead of harpsichord.
To add icing on the cake, the composer will be present and will give a talk before the performance begins.
The event, part of the Two Moors Festival, is on Monday, October 15, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 from the festival box office — tel 01643 831006. Visit the website http://www.thetwomoorsfestival.com">www.thetwomoorsfestival.com
