THIS area has a lively reputation as a centre for the practice of the martial arts. One of the most popular and fastest-growing is judo. Most judo players and instructors will be members of one of the many organisations, usually based on the locality where the judo takes place. It is now the objective of a national organisation, the British Judo Association (BJA) to enrol everybody who practises judo into membership of the BJA. Thousands of judo players enjoy their martial art for fun, pleasure, social contacts and the friendship built up over the years ? in other words their independence. This will all be lost if the BJA?s present campaign, backed by Sport England, to make itself the only recognised organisation within the next two years succeeds. If this is allowed to happen all other judo organisations will be forced to disband.
