WORRIED parents at Tavistock Primary School have met with police and council officers in an effort to improve safety on the walk to school.

The hope is that a walking bus scheme can be set up to the school — in the meantime officers and the police have assured parents they will work with them to provide education on pedestrian skills.

Parents Janet Lake and Su Woodside have been canvassing parents to get their views about walking to school and many children and carers have been involved in the National Walk to School Week.

Mrs Lake said: 'The aim is to raise awareness and support for travel choices that would be safer for all, but also healthier and environmentally better.'

She said response from parents has been 'overwhelmingly positive' in favour of having safer routes — she said many parents had 'very real concerns' about the volume of children using the dual campus at the College and Primary School, and the dangers of the busy A386.

Mrs Lake said the meeting was 'very encouraging'.

'It highlighted the willingness of everyone attending to work together for the common goal — a safer journey to school,' she said.

And Mrs Lake and Mrs Woodside stressed that changes and improvements would need the commitment of the majority of parents, not just a minority.
