THE recently introduced borough council Green and Clean scheme collected a massive 160 tonnes of garden waste and cardboard from West Devon homes for composting in June. The total is the equivalent of 23 double decker buses ? but West Devon Borough Council want residents not to forget that thick card can also be included in the scheme. Recycling officer Jane Savage said: ?Most residents are delighted by the scheme and the amounts we are collecting every week reflect this. ?However, there is very little thick card put out with the bags and we want to remind residents that corrugated card can be put either inside the white bags or flattened and placed by the side of them. ?Excessive amounts of thick card are difficult to accommodate in the green kerbside boxes and indeed in the recycling vehicles that collect from the boxes as these have to go back to the depot to unload more frequently. ?This is clearly not good for the environment, adds to local traffic problems and costs more in the long run. ?We want residents to know that thick card can be saved for the garden waste collections as it composts down nicely with the garden waste.?
