TIME is running out for schools in and around Okehampton to enter a unique poetry competition that's jam-packed with prizes. Youngsters in West Devon are being challenged to once again give free reign to the poet within for an Okehampton-based poetry competition. The competition has been organised by Okehampton resident, Derek Godfrey-Brown and is to coincide with St George's Day on April 23. The competition is now in its second year, after its first year was a great success and attracted more than 150 entries. Its aim is to encourage an understanding and expression of contemporary England through poetry. However, the deadline of Thursday March 20 is only a week away and more entries are needed if the competition is to be a success. There will be two groups for this year's competition, one for seven to nine year olds (years 3 and 4) and the other for nine to 12 year olds (years 5, 6 and 7). Closing dates for entries is Thursday March 20. There is no entry fee but anyone wishing to enter, or with any questions, should contact Mr Godfrey- Brown as soon as possible on 01837 53158 or at Larkbeare, Okehampton, Devon, EX20 4NL. Each poem, on the subject, 'Why I like England,' should be word processed, no more than 20 lines and on one side of A4. Last year Spreyton Primary School was named overall winners and received £150 while the best individual entrant won a new bike. There were also other cash prizes shared between the other entrants.
