FROM what I have read in the Times, I too fear that The Wharf that we have come to value as an integral part of Tavistock life could change with the new people taking over the lease. This would be a great shame, given all the hard work that has gone on over the past eleven years to make it an excellent entertainment and cultural centre for West Devon. I have no idea of the financial side of running the Wharf or whether £80,000 is a reasonable sum to ask for the lease, but it occurred to me that it might not be impossible for the people of Tavistock and the surrounding area to raise this sum themselves to safeguard the future of the Wharf for some time to come. Shares of £5 or £10 could be offered so that most people who patronise the Wharf could afford to help, but any number of shares could be bought so that local organisations and those with deeper pockets could contribute larger sums.
