BRAVERY awards have been given to two Tavistock police officers.

Section Officer Barry Pyke and his son, Special Constable Michael Pyke, were called to a house in Gunnislake where a man was threatening suicide. The man then armed himself with a knife and pointed it at Section Officer Pyke, who managed to disarm him and engage him in conversation. Special Constable Pyke provided back-up and radio communication.

Both officers gradually built a rapport with the man, who eventually agreed to leave the house peacefully and was taken to hospital for psychiatric assessment.

The Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall, Sir John Evans, has presented the two officers with commendations for courage and initiative.
