THE people of Okehampton and the surrounding area should be aware that a major development is about to take place outside Okehampton. A wind farm, comprising three turbine generators, a sub station, temporary anemometry mast, access tracks and ancillary development is planned for land just to the west of the A386 on the Bowerland Road near the Manor House Hotel (SX 552 932). These monsters of towers will be 81 meters high, twice the height of Exeter Cathedral and nearly four times the height of St James? Chapel in Okehampton. They will be seen from many places on Dartmoor and will be an eyesore and when visitors think of Okehampton, they will think of turbines not our wonderful town and the beauty of Dartmoor. All new homes should be fitted with solar power panels on their roofs as this will help cut down the need for some of these dreadful wind farms. The council should be looking at putting solar panels in all new homes. We have done this to our property, it is our way of helping the problem. Wind farms are not the answer. A local group has been formed called BRAG and there will be a public meeting in the Charter Hall on April 20 at 7.30pm. Whatever your views please try to attend.
