THE POPULAR South Zeal and District Open Gardens Day makes a welcome return on June 16 after the cancellation of last year's event due to the foot and mouth crisis.

This will be the tenth time that the parishioners of South Tawton have opened their gardens to support the Victory Hall and the event runs from 10.30am to 6pm.

As usual there will be a ploughman's lunch with puddings in the Victory Hall between noon and 2pm and some gardens will be serving coffee and cream teas.

An added attraction this year will be a sale of locally grown plants — shrubs, perennials, annuals, vegetables and herbs.

The sites open, which extend to 15, will provide an interesting range of contrasts — hidden gardens in the main village, gardens on impossible slopes on Ramsley Lane and along the Throwleigh and East Week roads, and large country gardens, one on the very edge of Dartmoor.

Entry is by programme on the day, which costs £2.50 and gives access to all gardens. Children are free.

Organisers are asking visitors to use the village hall car park and leave their dogs at home.
