AN EXHIBITION to inform people of the work of the Okement Rivers Improvement Group is being held in Okehampton Library from March 26 to April 6.
Since the group was formed almost two years ago, funds have successfully been brought in to improve the river and riverside and two studies have been done on the East Okement River by the Westcountry Rivers Trust.
Projects in the pipeline include a new bridge to the Millennium Wood, more tree planting and tree felling where the river is shaded and a community orchard.
Secretary Kate Keats said a regular task for the group was picking litter out of the rivers although they would like not to have to do so. 'We are also hoping to persuade the Ockment Centre and West Devon Borough Council to use the river power as a source of sustainable energy by using turbines from the leat or piping water from the weir,' she said.
If you miss the exhibition, the group's annual meeting is in the Ockment Centre on April 26 where a short talk will be given by John Hickey from the Westcountry Rivers Trust. It will be another opportunity to look at information displays and discuss the improvement programme.
