RISING folk musician Jon Dyer will lead an open workshop for flute players on Sunday, December 2.

Jon will be teaching a couple of English tunes by ear and helping people to explore a variety of flute techniques mainly used in traditional folk music.

Different styles of phrasing, playing, intonation, ornamentation and improvisation will be covered.

Jon plays flute in the bands Dyer:Cumming's and Gadarene, and has featured at many folk festivals over the last few years. He has recently been collaborating with BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winner James Findlay for his recent album release Another Day Another Story.

He is collaborating with Wren Music until Christmas as part of his degree in music. Jon said: 'I have been playing flute from the age of eight. I was taught classically but it wasn't long until I found traditional music and this is now where my passion falls.

'I've learnt and developed a lot of folk flute technique along the way and now want to share it with everyone.'

The workshop is open to all sizes of side-blown flutes, including bamboo and wood ones, and open to people aged eight or over. Youngsters under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. A basic understanding of your instrument is required, so the workshop is not suitable for absolute beginners.

Entry is by donation and advance booking is advisable — email [email protected]">[email protected] or call 01837 53754. Proceeds will support Wren's ongoing work in the community and education.

The workshop runs in All Saints Church Hall on Market Street from 5pm to 7pm.
