TAVISTOCK Twinning Association celebrated another successful visit from its German counterparts from Celle recently ? and issued a warm invitation to prospective members to join the thriving group.

The visit included a packed programme of events. In addition to time spent with their host families, there was a variety of social get-togethers throughout the week of the Germans? visit.

The programme began with a barbecue held at Tavistock Vicarage gardens by kind permission of the vicar, Preb John Rawlings, and was followed by a reception given by mayor Cllr Jenny Metcalf in Tavistock Town Hall.

Town crier Bob Rose and his consort, Shirley Thorington, opened the ceremony before a formal address by Cllr Metcalf and greetings from Celle twinning leader Wilfred Burke.

Damp and foggy weather did nothing to dampen the enjoyment of a trip to Lynmouth which included a stop at Arlington Court, home of Rosalie Chichester, cousin of Squire Chichester of Grenofen.

The gentlemen of the twinning association were the victors during a skittles evening held at the Royal British Legion Club in Tavistock. The week of events concluded with a farewell dinner held at Tavistock Golf Club.

Pat Gardner, spokeswoman for the twinning association, said: ?Our friends from Celle departed from Tavistock on 18th July. Again, the atmosphere of warmth and friendship was much in evidence ? Tavistock Twinning was sorry to see their Celle friends leave.

?The very sincere affection of the Germans is very touching ? we have made such good friends over the years, it?s a wonderful partnership.?

Mrs Gardner said the twinning association currently numbers about 20 members ? but they would love to welcome new members, of any age, to the group. Visits are enjoyed every summer, usually around July. Next summer, the Tavistock members will visit Celle.

?We would love some new people to join us ?we really would,? said Mrs Gardner.
