TAVISTOCK'S Bedford Square will be transported back through musical history as it hosts a unique event this Saturday (April 17).
The Musical Box Society of Great Britain will give a display and demonstration of traditional organ grinding this weekend from 10am to 1pm.
In the late 19th and early 20th century, street performing organ grinders were commonplace, pushing their instruments from place to place on a handcart as they tried to earn a living. Today, the Musical Box Society is dedicated to keeping the world of mechanical music alive.
The society has invited town mayor Cllr Mandy Govier to open the organ grind event at 10am, and any money donated by appreciative audiences will be donated to the mayor's charity for this year — Tavistock Community Football Club.
The Musical Box Society holds several weekend events around the UK, inviting all enthusiasts of the 19th century music box sound from around the country to join them and they have chosen Tavistock to start off their 2010 season.
