AN OPEN evening will be held at the Ockment Centre in Okehampton next Thursday (February 8) inviting people to join in a new community musical play. Community arts organisation The Wren Trust is hoping to stage a play in 18 months time, entitled 'Okehampton Songtales' which will be about Okehampton and its history and involve music and singing. Funding of £17,200 has been awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund for the project, which is a collaboration between Wren and the Ockment Centre and also financial contributions have come from the Okehampton United Charities, Arts Council England South West and Devon County Council. The play will offer a wide range of opportunities for people of all ages to get involved with regular workshops and rehearsals — as actors, singers, musicians, sound and lighting technicians, props and costume managers. The project organisers would also like to hear from people who can provide historical information which may be relevant. All ages are welcome but under 14s will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Anyone who is interested in taking part or has ideas to contribute can go along to the Ockment Centre at 6pm where a light buffet will be served. Anyone who cannot make the event but would like to be involved should call 01837 53754.
