Falmouth seconds 2

Okehampton Columbines 3

VIV Weatherington played out of position for the Columbines at this hockey game played in Truro but rose nobly to the occasion at centre marker as opposed to her usual attacker. Viv was player of the match with her stalwart and effective positioning and stickwork.

Okehampton looked the better team with every player using each other to full advantage, with fast passes and spreading the ball.  It was Falmouth who got the first short corner but Oke controlled the short corner and many more like it as Jo Moppett came back to help the defence.

Forward Jo Moppett's speed and ball control gave Falmouth many anxious moments especially as Kim Davey and Lesley Bingham played with equal determination and panache.  Kim fed a ball into the circle which Lesley picked up at an awkward angle to wrong foot the goalie with a superb shot to score the first goal of the match.

Falmouth came back attacking strongly down the right half and flooding the circle with players equalised in hurly burly.

Jane Jones, Alex Collins and Sarah Toms worked tirelessly for the visitors to hold back the Falmouth attacks and effectively blocked with sound and determined tackling; Alex excelled in stealing the ball when Falmouth thought they had a safe pass.

Okehampton had numerous highly elegant attacking formations and were frustrated as on several occasions, the ball just skimmed around the goal-mouth.  Finally the skill and perseverance paid off with Lesley Bingham making the touch which makes all the difference.

A well taken short corner with fast passing amongst Viv Weatherington, Jo Moppett,  Jane Jones and Kim Davey ended with Jo scoring to put Okehampton 3-1 up.

Falmouth now showed their worth with several breaks down the centre but Okehampton's defence marked well to prevent any score with Sophie Whiteley and Netty Collette making several clearances.  Then an excellent solo run found the gap in Okehampton's defence and Falmouth made it 3-2. Okehampton continued to play skilful hockey but legs were getting weary and it was with some relief that they heard the final whistle.
