Okehampton Columbines Second XI 1 Mannamead Second XI 6 COLUMBINES second team played with increased levels of fitness and teamwork but could not overcome the pressure Mannamead maintained throughout the second half. Okehampton began with clear passes but a successful attacking run from Mannamead allowed the first goal of the game. Okehampton?s backs responded, ensuring Mannamead were well marked. Attacking runs from Okehampton followed, impeding Mannamead?s progress. Chris Leithbridge made a strong attempt on goal from a powerful cross by Sarah Toms, who made another attempt later in the first half. Jessica Miller hit an excellent but unlucky shot from a short corner. The forwards, taking full advantage of player position, soon gained a well-earned goal from Grace Thorpe. Mannamead responded by breaking through the Okehampton defence twice more in the first half. Several chances developed for Okehampton during the second half, but opportunities to pass effectively under pressure did not come and Mannamead quickly turned this to their advantage. They made quick runs and passes to overcome Okehampton, although they were constantly pressurised by Hannah Whiteley?s tackling. The backs were resolute. Goalkeeper Sophie Whiteley surpassed herself with great commitment, making near to consistently accurate, strong, confident kicks from the goal-mouth, keeping the scoreline steady.
