Tavistock RFC 2nd 10 Withycombe 23 AFTER a good start to the season with three wins from three games under the new leadership of John Wakem and Martyn Credicott, Tavistock came up against a very well drilled set of Withycombe forwards, for which Tavistock had no answers. Withycombe raced into an 18 point lead but not without a fight from the Tavistock pack, led by Chris Johns and Andrew Griffiths. With the lack of quality ball being won it would take something special for Tavistock to score and it came from the Smerdon brothers. First Sam saved a dummy pass and and broke through the Withycombe defence to score out wide. Credicott failed to convert with a tricky wind. This was followed by good hands from the backs to set young colt Tom Vallance to draw Withycombe?s wingers to pop to Colin Smerdon to power his way over the line taking Withycombe?s last line of defence with him. With their tails up Tavistock started to play well and felt they could sneak a win, but were caught napping and Withycombe scored another try. Skipper Credicott saw good signs from the young Colts that came into the side for the strength in depth to come for the club.
