Kingsbridge Colts 12
Okehampton Colts 30
Kingsbridge last week beat second placed Brixham, so Okehampton knew this was going to be a tough match and one they had to win to keep their cup hopes alive.
Okehampton hit Kingsbridge with three converted tries in the first 20 minutes of superb rugby.
The Oke pack of Stuart Bennie, Brad Hudson, Tom Richards, Mike Panton, Merrick Kirby, Luke Crocker, Will Heard and Will Hawking held their own in the set pieces; at the rucks and mauls dominated the Kingsbridge eight with second row Panton driving through on many occasions to win the ball.
Back row of Crocker, Heard and Hawking pressurised Kingsbridge half-backs, along with scrum-half Richard Friend, who with a plentiful supply of good quick ball caused a lot of problems with sniping runs or long passes to the backs that never allowed Kingsbridge backs to move for that first 20 minutes.
The first try came from a jinxing run from full-back Jake Chisholm from halfway to 15 metres out; a good off-load to fly-half Kevin Dennis to score beside the upright.
The second came from a penalty 15 metres out — Dennis put in a quick cross field kick for wing Callum Ausden to collect and score.
The third came from centre Carl Poynton who intercepted a Kingsbridge pass on the halfway to score; he also converted all three, had a penalty just before half-time and slotted over a drop-goal early in the second half before being replaced, through injury, by Cameron Rickerby whose tackling along with outside centre Rory Honeychurch was very solid.
Okehampton Colts are now second in the league behind Ivybridge.
