Tavistock Colts 16

Newton Abbot Colts 3

ANOTHER impressive performance from Tavistock saw them record a victory at Sandy Park on Saturday.

Playing against a bigger pack the Tavistock eight were outstanding, Hooker Ben Sutton had an excellent game and in concert with fellow front rowers Matt Martin and Darren Sutton secured possession both in tight and loose play.

As in their last outing Tavistock played to the conditions keeping the ball tight and only releasing the backs when deep in opposition territory.

Number eight Hamish Pearse-Danker made large inroads into the Newton defence and with support from Phil Maloney and John Payne was able to dominate the terms of how the game was played. However on one notable occasion Tavistock did spread the ball wide early and only desperate last ditch defence stopped Mark Ewings from scoring.

From this pressure Newton were forced to concede a penalty and this was converted by skipper Josh Sutton to give Tavistock the lead midway through the half.

Pressure from Tavistock saw Adam Gradidge drive deep into Newton and when the ball was recycled Josh Sutton created the gap for Duncan Law to scythe through the defence for a try converted by Josh.

The second half was a repeat of the first with Tavistock keeping on the pressure — it told in terms of penalties conceded and Josh Sutton converted two which put Tavistock out of danger.

However, Newton did not cave in the face of pressure and came back at Tavistock giving them work to do in defence where both wing Graham Steer and full back Mark Ewings gave nothing away.

Tavistock gave away a penalty under their own posts and were punished by a successful kick.

Christmas fixtures for the colts see them at home to Crediton this Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm and entertaining the college first XV in the Andrew Law Memorial match on the Sunday December 31 kick-off noon.
