Okehampton Colts 5 Devonport Services 0 OKEHAMPTON entertained Devonport on a heavy pitch at Oaklands. Both teams were evenly matched, showing passion and commitment throughout. Despite the mud, the quality of rugby was excellent with superb forward play both in set-piece and rucks and mauls, both sides looking dangerous but neither able to convert pressure into points due to committed tackling. Ball regularly reached both sets of wingers who made good yardage. Okehampton?s centres, Alex Dennis and Phil Woods, had good games in attack and defence with strong running and support play. George Trerise in his debut Colts game at hooker and Neil Perrot on the flank put in tremendous workrates to keep Devonport from scoring. Stewart Down, playing out of position at scrum half, tackled like a demon and drove any fringe runners backwards. In the end it was intelligent play which separated the sides. Okehampton marked any chip kicks in their 22 and found touch when needed to relieve pressure. Varied moves from fly half saw attacking moves come from all angles and pin point chip kicks behind the Devonport backline kept Okehampton going forward. The only score of the match came in the first quarter with fly half Herrod-Taylor beating the rush defence with an exquisite grubber kick which was touched down by full back Matt Dennis over the try line. Man of the match: Stewart Down.
