A STUNNING mosaic depicting the historical sites of Tavistock is due to be unveiled in the town next week. The mosaic, which attracted a grant of more than £16,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, has been created by 13 different community groups, plus many individuals, and is set to create a stunning visual impact to visitors when it is erected outside Tavistock Pannier Market. Helen McFarlane, project co-ordinator, said she was delighted with the way the mosaic had turned out: ?I think it?s fantastic. It?s really colourful ? as we have met over the months and seen it progressing, it?s been really exciting. ?It will be lovely for people to see it as they walk through the arch where the tourist information office is.? The mosaic depicts around 20 sites of local historical, industrial and heritage interest in Tavistock, such as the Cornmarket and Betsy Grimbal?s Tower. The tiles which make up the complete mosaic have been worked on by a wide variety of groups, including St Rumon?s School, the All Out Choir, Harewood Day Centre, Davie House, Cornerways, Chelfham School, Milton Abbot School, Meavy School and the Molly Owen Centre. Helen said: ?We?ve really had all age groups and abilities working on it and quite a few interested individuals too. ?Different groups had different tiles to do and they have done research on the sites. We had Gerry Woodcock come to give us a historical chat and the groups worked on their designs with the Plymouth artist, Emma Spring. ?One person, Tom Kiely, has been brilliant, he has done photos and videos of the different site, which will be kept at the library.? In addition to the mosaic, a leaflet explaining all the sites depicted on the mosaic has been printed. ?The leaflets will be in the tourist information centre, so people can pick up one and visit all the different sites, as they are all within walking distance ? it should work quite well.? The mosaic is due to go on display in Tavistock Library on April 3. It should be erected outside the pannier market by the end of the month ? planning permission for the mosaic has already been granted by West Devon Council.
