TWO football teams from Year 7 and Year 9 at Callington Community College played in the Cornwall County Cup finals at Wadebridge Football Club recently with one team coming out as county champions.

Both teams played exceptionally well and the Year 9 team were successful in their game winning 7-1 to become county champions.

The Year 9 team were disappointed by the news their captain James Jack had broken his leg the day before the final, but all 18 members of the squad contributed to the result. They showed great sportsmanship when collecting the trophy.

Goal scorers were Josh Davies 3, Ben Maciver-Redwood 2, Corey Freeman 1 and Isaac King 1.

A spokesperson for the school said: 'Staff from another school commented on the superb behaviour and etiquette shown by all our students and agreed they were the most talented group of Year 9 footballers. Congratulations to the whole squad — a very good performance.'

The Year 7 football team faced Penryn in their county cup final. They had won all their previous games, including two very difficult matches against Liskeard and Penrice schools, to earn their place in the final. Unfortunately it was not their day and although they were the better side for large parts of the first half, they somehow found themselves 2-0 down at half time.

They pushed forward in the second half in the hope of grabbing a few goals, only to concede two more. The final score was 4-0 to Penryn.

Congratulations were expressed to James Garwood, Callum Slater, Joe Jago, Alex Maciver-Redwood, Louis Sharp, Isaac Fentiman, Alex Jacob, Max Pawley, Leo Smith, Rhys Shirley, Haydon Hoskin and Andrew Foxcraft.
