I NOTICE that your correspondent last week (New college scheme is an excellent idea), does not describe the new scheme in detail. The reality is that the young people are herded into limited areas indoors, and now after complaints, one outdoor area, where it is noisy and overcrowded, giving no relief to the many students who need to recharge their batteries for the next lesson, in calm and quiet.

Having had two children at the college, I also applaud efforts to deal with perceived difficulties, but young people must have self-regulatory systems in order to grow towards adult social behaviour and members of staff

standing guard at the doors of a desperately overcrowded room do not provide any 'control' or better supervision for inappropriate behaviour.

Surely, once again, the poor behaviour of a few young people has generated this 'knee jerk' reaction; is this the sort of 'control' most of our young people need?

To those policy makers at Tavistock College, it seemed like a good idea, but now it needs rapidly adapting before noise and overcrowding at break and lunch times begin to generate the problems you are trying to solve. Our young people are worth more than this!
