TWO adventurous Lions Club members yomped for seven days along the coastline in a bid to help disadvantaged children go on holiday.

Callington Lions Club president Jamie Dowdall and fellow Lions member Phil Lamb trekked for 160 miles across tough terrain, from Cremyll to Lands End, to raise money and awareness for childrens charity, CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids), which enables disadvantaged children to go on respite breaks.

The pair walked for more than 12 hours a day, averaging around 20 miles, and raised £3,000 double the amount they were aiming for.

Jamie said: We walked along the coast path unsupported, with our backpacks. The terrain was quite tough, especially having to walk over boulders in Lizard. We climbed about 300 metres more than if wed gone up Everest.

Originally we wanted to raise about £1,500 but we doubled that. But it wasnt just about the money, we wanted to try to raise awareness of the charity as well.

The two Lions members came up with the idea one evening. Jamie said: We originally thought we would do the Three Peaks challenge, but weve got the coast here and its local so we thought why not?

CHICKS was really pleased with the money and theyve invited us to come to see and talk to the kids. One of the CHICKS trustees came to see us on one of the days along our journey as well.
